Track Of The Week: Ubuntu

With South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup in June 2010, and using the tag line “celebrating Africa’s humanity“, Jenerik Soulz debut’s their latest single, Ubuntu, a song about humanity. Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s definition is that, A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.” These words carry the important message that with Ubuntu people understand their value to society and are never isolated because that self-assurance has built a heart of love and understanding whereby people work effectively together. About Neo De Jenero

Get up off your backside if you plan to be someone. – Neo De Jenero

Neo De Jenero Yellow1985 March 20th, in the heart of Johannesburg was the birth of a soul known as Neo De Jenero. With the motto “Get up off your backside if you plan to be someone,” Neo is the epitome of a hustler in its purest form.

His musical journey began back in 2000, when he started dj’ing on recorded tapes and CD’s at high school functions. This laid the foundation to developing his mixing skills as he later graduated to vinyls. Neo has had a passionate interest in music and entertainment from a young age: in high school he acquired the position of chairperson of entertainment committee which saw him overlooking the entertainment activities in every school event.

His commitment to music would spill over to his university days in Kwazulu Natal, with him holding residency at Bassline. He later, after moving to the bright lights of Jo’burg city, started playing across the country at clubs such as Opium (Cape Town) Capital (Jo’burg), The Blunt (Limpopo) alongside some of the best DJ’s in the South Africa including Dj’s Fresh, Tira, Vinny Da Vinci, Glen Lewis, Oskido and many others.

His industrious and hard working nature has seen him collaborating with various entrepreneurs and organizations in hosting parties and functions across South Africa.

Neo De Jenero began music production late 2003 when his curiosity and fascination got the better of him and he asked for a 15 minute crash course on music production from his cousin (TBeatz) who was solely focused on hip hop production; this would bring rise to the formation of Jenerik Soulz.

Profoundly influenced by Rock n Roll music at a young age through listening to his father’s records of the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bon Jovi, Scorpio and other rock legends, Neo De Jenero was bound to be a discipline of music. His musical ear extends beyond deep house music and his musical production skills have a distinct and clear influence of broken beats, jazz, hip hop and soul. Neo De Jenero, after surviving a near death car crash in late 2007 and leaving paramedics baffled at how he walked out alive, believes that he’s still on earth for a reason: to feed the soul of the young and old with his music and make a difference in the world.

Neo De Jenero who is a strong believer in academia, has been a consistent achiever from high school scooping Merit certificates for accounting, Economics and Science in 1999, and earning the prized award of merit certificates for best Student in accounting from 2000 till 2002. His achievements carried through into University completing his Honors in B.Com Accounting. He has also successfully completed his part 2 of SAICA’s Board exams securing him the much coveted title as a qualified Chartered Accountant at the tender age of 25 and received a personal phone call from the minister of finance Pravin Gordhan inviting him for lunch and congratulating him on this momentous achievement. Neo De Jenero was in late 2009 appointed a board member of dance4life South Africa and is currently working for the National Treasury in Pretoria as an accountant. His passion for and belief in the power of education extends to him devoting his free time to tutoring matriculants and lecturing 4th year Bcom. Accounting students. He strongly believes in giving back and is an active member of the fundraising committee of his former high school, St Marks College.

Apart from being a dj, producer and academic, Neo De Jenero is a keen entrepreneur who has ventures ranging from Business Consulting, Risk Management, Financial Accounting and IT.

Jenerik Soulz Room Service – Album Art and Tracklisting

Jenerik Soulz’ Long Awaited Debut Album, Room Service. 15 Hot Trax. 6 Hot Collabo’s: Bantu Soul, Antonio Lyons, Aya, Lutho John, Denise & Soulful Lite.Executive Producer: Beatmaker…OUT NOW!!! (released 20 November 2009)… order your signed copy by sending an email to roomservice@jeneriksoulz.com.

Room Service LP CoverThe Jenerik Soulz trio’s music stems from the distinct sounds of Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz which seeks to capture the essence of organic sounds blended within the heartbeat of house music. This is a collective contribution from its different members on the debut album titled Room service. The first officially released single, Room Service, adds personality to the sound yet embedded deep within the core of the music are revolutionary messages which seek to capture the listeners imagination as the music is rich in texture and bright with an infinite amount of messages.

Jenerik Soulz as a band tries to evoke deep underlying feelings with the use of soul in the melodic structures yet in juxtapose, releasing energy with a sense of celebration and festivity with hard hitting drum patterns while also using synthesizers in capturing the modern, urban feel of the youth’s vibrancy.

The collaborations formed on the album were instinctive and fit comfortably into the soulful realm of Jenerik Soulz. Bantu Soul adds a warm masculine presence within the tone of the song “Again” while complimenting Dionne Song’s pure femininity. “D.I.Y.” brings together Dionne Song and her highly energetic friends in the form of Denise and Lutho John, who bring a fresh zest of youthful vibrancy and eloquent delivery in their passionate collaboration. “Summa lovin” packs the punches as a summer anthem calling in the soulful elegance of Aya whose telepathic exchanges with Dionne Song bring an organic affair in execution. The final collaboration is with Antonio Lyons on the sentimental “Jo’burg city”, as he breaths insight into the heartbeat of the track, he’s honest portrayal paints a vivid picture like a painter on a canvas.

The album brings together a diverse pool of subject matters with tracks such as “dance4life”, aligned with our relationship with the organization dance4life, seeking to highlight the effects of HIV/AIDS and the need for responsible living. “Let your light shine” is an inspirational anthem which promotes people to never give up on their dreams and be a light onto others.

The album versatility in subject matter provokes a multi-dimensional look at the world with its universal messages such as love, caring, respect and tolerance reverberating through every note. The central theme which characterizes the album is the element of positivity, which is circular among every track with a fresh perspective.

Simply put Room Service is a melting pot of eclectic sounds, which lurk between the fine line of unconventional music and creative standards.

The tracklisting for Room Service is as follows:

  1. dance4life
  2. Again feat. Bantu Soul
  3. Let Your Light Shine

About Dionne Song

With an effervescent blend of energy, soul and elegance, Dionne Edith Malan aka Dionne Song was the missing piece of the Jenerik Soulz puzzle to be added in 2008. Her sensually seductive voice which pierces through any ear offers a concise and lucid message for listeners.

I have always had an affinity for music, listening to my mom’s old school jams. It’s as if music opened up the world to me, growing up I would find myself gravitating towards people who shared my love for music. – Dionne Song

About TBeatz

Without music, life would be a mistake. – TBeatz

TBeatz 2Born in the belly of Pretoria, Tebogo Leshabane a.k.a TBeatz was baptized with the waters of music at the tender age of 14, when he became the drummer of an upcoming rock band called Lucid which was formed with high school friends.

He later strayed away, finding refuge in the circles of Hiphop and decided to enthusiastically pursue music production at the tender age of 16. This led to the formation of a 6 member crew named the Precautioners, who encompassed hip hop by using sped up jazz and soul samples with vicarious flows maintained with thought provoking lyrics.

The dissolving of Precautioners resulted in TBeatz rolling solo and crafting his art by spending long hours uncovering the unwritten secrets of music production with the inspiring help of music connoisseurs such as Hugh Masekela, Lonnie Liston Smith, Incognito, Queen, Phillip Glass, The Purist, RJD2, TKzee, Blue 6, John Williams, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Kanye West, The Neptunes, John Brion……the list is endless.

From a young age TBeatz was destined to follow the path of the Arts with a keen eye on the classics, a recent graduate of Wits University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Media and held the leadership position as head of Media and advertising for a society called Dance@wits. He has a passion for Sports and media specifically new media. TBeatz is currently working for SuperSport as a content controller and handles a variety of sports such as rugby, golf, cricket, etc. On the musical front Tbeatz is currently attending Shine music academy in piano to further his knowledge in music theory.

While showing his cousin Neo De Jenero how to produce, a spark was started which would be the birth of Jenerik Soulz, and the rest in history. He is now moving steadily with the wheels of Jenerik Soulz: now a trio with the addition of Dionne Song in 2008. But throughout his journey he has grown with the melody of life in his heart through music. He lives with the words of Friedrich Nietzsche who stated that, “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

yfm_no2

Beat only by the hot kwaito number from Mzambiya, Jenerik Soulz’ Room Service makes it to Number 2 on the Yfm weekly top 40 charts. Climbing up 2 spots from the previous week’s number 4, and a mere 6 weeks on the charts, Jenerik Soulz is appreciative of the love they are getting from Yfm… Yona Ke Yona.
