Rent PosterRENT is the seventh longest running show in Broadway history and grossed over $280 million during its Broadway run. Over the course of its groundbreaking 12-year New York run, RENT transformed a generation’s view of musical theatre – and changed Broadway forever.

RENT is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, “La Boheme.” It tells the story of a group of impoverished young bohemians struggling to survive in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, Under the shadow of AIDS. It tells the Riveting story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today.

About Dionne Song

With an effervescent blend of energy, soul and elegance, Dionne Edith Malan aka Dionne Song was the missing piece of the Jenerik Soulz puzzle to be added in 2008. Her sensually seductive voice which pierces through any ear offers a concise and lucid message for listeners.

I have always had an affinity for music, listening to my mom’s old school jams. It’s as if music opened up the world to me, growing up I would find myself gravitating towards people who shared my love for music. – Dionne Song

Dionne Black

Dionne Edith Malan was born in Morningside, Sandton and from an early age took a keen interest in the Arts. Throughout her school career Dionne Song has shown a love for the stage and participated in school plays and productions, she has been a dance pupil from an early age and has participated in numerous concerts and won numerous prizes at Eisteddfods for the performing arts in the Tshwane area. She was awarded the schools honors blazer for her contributions as a leader and participant in the cultural activities of her school. Dionne Song has held both the junior and senior Ms. Clapham titles – a school competition judged on personality, talent and confidence. Her energy is inexhaustible and has delighted her peers and others with her vivacious personality on and off stage.

Her first encounter with television work in 2004 was via a YoTV youth program presenting competition; she was one of the ten finalists chosen from approximately 3000 entrants countrywide. She was not one of the two candidates selected but was subsequently offered another opportunity to present a youth program on TV 2: HeySA! , She recently portrayed the character Beyonce on the ever popular M-net sitcom, The Coconuts, and received a SAFTA nomination for 2008 best supporting actress in comedy: a momentous achievement considering her age and her being nominated against some of the most established actresses in the South Africa television industry .Her recent appearance on television was as guest on the show “crazed out” on Etv charming the viewers with her free-spirited persona and bubbly personality.

She has participated in four TUT productions: the 2007 musical “Bohemia”, in a supporting role opening up opportunities of leading roles in 2008’s “I love you, you’re perfect, now change”, “Urine town” and a striking portrayal of Joanne Jefferson in the musical RENT in 2009. The reviews mentioned her as “dynamic and a star in the making.”

Dionne Song’s music influence is drawn from artists such as Nina Simone, Bheki Mseleku, Roberta Flack, Letta Mbuli, Billy Holiday, Chick Korea, Ella Fitzgerald and Miriam Makeba to name a few. She is developing her unique and distinct voice as she prepares for a professional career in the near future. When asked about her musical journey, Dionne lights up and states, “I have always had an affinity for music, listening to my mom’s old school jams. It’s as if music opened up the world to me, growing up I would find myself gravitating towards people who shared my love for music”.

Dionne Song has completed her diploma at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in musical theatre and is currently pursuing her B-Tech in the same field. She and friend Lutho John (presenter for SABC youth show Harambe) have just started a theatre production company. Their ultimate goal is to produce their own shows and empower youth artists. Moving steadily with her Jenerik Soulz brothers Dionne Song has been given the opportunity to dip her throat in house music, and lives by the motto that, “who you are is God’s gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.”
