Dionne Song A Big Talker? The Citizen Article

Jenerik Soulz leading lady Dionne Song took time out recently to speak to The Citizen‘s Sibusiso Mkwanazi. They talked about Dionne’s upcoming role in the Tropika Island Of Treasure 3 and her love for Motown music, among other things. Asked about her strategy to win and bring home the R1 million prize, she says

“I am young and unassuming and I think people will think I am not a threat to them, so that should play to my advantage”

Check out the full article on The Citizen website here.

Don’t forget you too stand a chance at the R1 million (and instant Reality TV stardom), just check out Dionne’s Tropika Island Of Treasure 3 page to enter online or sms ‘Dionne’ (without quotes) and your full name, age, contact number and your city of residence to 41682 (SMS charged at R1.50 and entries close on 31 October 2010), and you might just find yourself treasure hunting with Miss Dionne herself in the exotic island of Phuket.

Jenerik Soulz Spreading The Positive dance4life Virus

Today, like every day, more than 7,400 people, half of whom are under 25, will be infected with HIV. dance4life is going to put a stop to this by spreading something else: the positive dance4life virus!

In the 80 days between 13th September and 1st December, dance4life wants to infect 592,000 people with the positive virus. Why 592,000? Because that’s the amount of people that will actually become infected with HIV during this same period.

You too can support dance4life in the fight against HIV and AIDS:
Go to facebook.dance4life.com and join the positive virus, just like me!  Invite all of your friends, and help ensure that more people join the positive dance4life virus than are actually infected with HIV!

Beat HIV, spread the positive dance4life virus!

Jenerik Soulz appointed as Ambassadors for Fair Play for Africa Campaign

Jenerik Soulz has been officially been appointed Ambassadors for the Fair Play for Africa Campaign. Fair Play for Africa is a pan African campaign that aims to use the platform of 2010 FIFA World Cup to ensure equitable access to quality health services for African citizens especially women, children, and people living with HIV and AIDS using civil society organisations from across the African continent.

Fair play for Africa will be working with campaign activities in 10 African countries (Angola, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya) and also aims to use the 2010 FIFA World Cup to put pressure on African governments to meet their health Millennium Development Goal (MDG) commitments by linking up with international initiatives to put the health MDG’s back on track. Jenerik Soulz will be participating in these activities.

The logo and theme of the campaign is the whistle – a positive sound to celebrate the progress that has been made already; and the whistle is also a means to demand accountability and blow the whistle on under-performing African and international governments (who have promised to spend 15% of their budgets on health). Also, the one with the whistle holds the power (the people) and it is a clear reference to the World Cup and football.

In support of the campaign, Jenerik Soulz produced and wrote a pumping, energetic and positive theme song titled Leaders of the World (The Whistle Song). The campaign was officially launched in Angola on 31st January 2010 (the finals of the African Cup of Nations) where the song was played for the first time.

Visit www.fairplayforafrica.org to find out more about the campaign.

Fair Play for Africa Music Festival

dance4life and Fair Play for Africa Campaign ambassadors, Jenerik Soulz, are set to perform at a festival during the FIFA World Cup on June 18th (11hrs.30 – 23hrs.00) at the King Zwelithini stadium, one of Durban’s official public viewing areas in Umlazi. The Festival is one of the many Fair Play for Africa events in South Africa and nine other countries in Africa to promote African government delivery in expanding access to quality health care for Africans. It is being driven by over 200 African civil society organisations in 10 African countries

The free Festival is in the heart of the Umlazi community, only 17 km from the Durban Business District and one of the biggest townships in South Africa. It is a community where health care access is a daily challenge with the shortage of qualified doctors and nurses, long waiting times, high drop-out rates of ARV treatment and very high HIV levels (approximately 70% of all patients are HIV-infected). KZN has the greatest number of people living with HIV. Whereas the national voluntary HIV and AIDS testing (HCT) campaign aims to get 15 million people tested nationally, the Ethekwini municipality, of which Umlazi is a constituting part, targets 1.2 million of these. The festival will support the national and provincial government HCT campaign and communicate with the community about health and health care access through music, visuals, spoken words, football clinics, competitions, workshops and interviews with ambassadors and government representatives on stage. And of course there will be plenty of football. Starring during the day will be among others: Phillemon Masinga (former Bafana Bafana), Ronny Zondi (former Bafana Bafana), Arthur Zwane (former Bafana Bafana), MC Phumlani Dube and Fair Play ambassadors Maiko Zulu (Zambian reggae artist & activist) and Jenerik Soulz.

The festival gives us the possibility to reach out to thousands of football fans in the greater Umlazi and Durban area and create awareness on health issues and access to health. We will be encouraging the festival attendees to sign up to the Fair Play for Africa campaign pledge and become active stakeholders for universal access to health care in Africa. Through our mobilisation efforts in partnership with the City of Durban’s AIDS Programme, we will encourage people to get tested for HIV/AIDS before and after the festival.

The festival and the Fair Play for Africa Campaign go much further than a one-day event: it is truly aimed at and geared towards leaving a lasting legacy of health. We are just five years away from the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the goals that nearly all international governments have set to halve poverty and increase access to health by 2015. It is also the target year for African governments to fulfil their promises of spending 15% of national budgets on adequate health care provision. This year, while we celebrate our achievements and enjoy the tricks of the world’s best football players, we cannot take our eyes of the ball: we need to work together to accelerate efforts to bring about health for all in Africa.

RSVP On Facebook.

The dance4life programme in South Africa kicked off in the Eastern Cape on 28th April 2010.

On the 18th of June, after the Fair Play Festival, Jenerik Soulz will launch its album, Room Service, at Club SuCasa (125 Stamford Hill Road) in Durban. Proceeds from this event will be donated to dance4life for its school projects.

DJ TIëSTO, JENERIK SOULZ AND GOLDFISH IN SUPPORT OF dance4life

dance4life South Africa is back in South Africa better than ever! The schools programme starts this April in Eastern Cape and a nation wide campaign follows in June. With the support of famous people like Desmond Tutu, DJ Tiësto, Goldfish and current ambassador Jenerik Soulz, dance4life is ready to empower youth to push back HIV and AIDS in a positive way.

2010 Kick off

dance4life empowers young people to take action against HIV and AIDS with a schools programme that is built around a 4 step approach: inspire, educate, activate and celebrate. The dance4life programme in Eastern Cape kicks off officially on the 28th of April with a heart connection tour at the Geju High School in Cata, Keiskammahoek. In a 90 min performance combining dance, music and education about HIV and AIDS prevention the school kids will be inspired to take part in the rest of the programme.

International perspective

After completing the schools programme the school kids become agents4change creating social change worldwide. On the Saturday before World Aids Day all the agents4change will celebrate their achievements at a huge biennial closing event. They will be dancing together with thousands of young people from all over the world. All 25 dance4life countries will be connected live by satellite, which makes this event truly unique! This year’s event will take place on 27 November in East London.

Tiësto4life

dance4life is supported by a lot of international artists, like Maxi Jazz, Paul van Dyk and DJ Tiësto. Tiësto has a special bond with dance4life South Africa, because in 2007 he visited some projects here. Tiësto: “The way dance4life engages young people around the world to do something about the HIV and AIDS problem is very powerful. The combination of serious content and entertainment ensures that dance4life gets young people on the move.” With the launch of www.facebook.com/dance4lifesouthafrica it’s now possible for every South African to join dance4life, as Tiësto did.

Goldfish supports dance4life South Africa

Nationally, dance4life South Africa has the support of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who is a member of the international advisory board. To reach the South African youth dance4life South Africa has also teamed up with South African youth idols like Jenerik Soulz, an up and coming Joburg-based house music band and Goldfish. ”In 2006 we performed at the global dance4life event in Cape Town. It was a great experience to dance together with a global movement of young people pushing back HIV and AIDS. We are still connected to dance4life and are happy they make a restart to be able to mobilise even more young South Africans to take action”, says Dominic Peters of Goldfish.

About dance4life South Africa

dance4life is an international initiative that uses the power of dance to inspire, educate and mobilise young people to take action against HIV and AIDS. dance4life is active in 25 countries around the world, where the concept is implemented by local implementing partners around their existing life-skills programs. In Eastern Cape the programme is implemented by Student Partnership Worldwide (SPW SA). South Africa was one of the first countries to set up the dance4life programme and to date we have reached 40,000 young South Africans between the ages 13 to 19 with our programme. dance4life South Africa has made a new start with a strong focus on reaching youth all over the country. www.dance4life.com/sa

About Jenerik Soulz

In late 2003, what seemed as a simple 15 minute crash course on production from TBeatz to Neo De Jenero, would pave the way to the formation of a duo known as Jenerik Soulz.

Music is the vernacular of the human soul.

Jenerik Soulz

2008 was to be the year in which the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle was found, in the form of a young lady known as Dionne Malan aka Dionne Song. This sees Neo De Jenero on drums, TBeatz on keys and Dionne Song on vocals. This forms the distinctive sound of Jenerik Soulz.

The name Jenerik Soulz has an infinite amount of interpretations, but essentially when broken down “Jenerik” is symbolic of a whole group of similar things, rather than particular. This describes the relationship between the trio: before the music and business, the three are simply family (one). The “Soulz” has the obvious relation to the influence of soul music on the sound and the trio’s ability to merge their souls in unity to create a fresh distinct sound which compliments their personalities.

The Jenerik Soulz sound has often created debate as to which category of music it can be placed; it is definitely house music, but it’s the amalgamation of three distinctive sounds derived from different genres of music that each member loves; primarily house, hiphop and jazz. Jenerik Soulz’ subject matter is a fresh urban sound which speaks to the youth; the generation which challenges the conservative norms of society and breaks away from the chains of stigma and stereotypes.

Education is held dearly in the hearts of all the Jenerik Soulz members, as they strongly believe in its upliftment not only in individuals but in communities, as it breaks the restrictive chains of illiteracy. The trio strives in their respective careers and music is a mere extension of their education and a way for them to share it with the world.

Dionne song is currently a third year Musical Theatre student at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and is actively involved within the walls of theatre and has participated in three TUT productions: in 2007 she was a supporting role in the musical “Bohemia”. During 2008 she was cast in two leading roles in “I love you, you’re perfect, now change” and “Urine town” (the reviews mentioned her as “dynamic and a star in the making”.) She is also recognized in the television industry as she recently portrayed the character Beyonce on the ever popular M-net sitcom, The Coconuts, and received a SAFTA nomination for 2008 best supporting actress in comedy.

TBeatz is a recent graduate of Wits University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media and English and is currently working for the broadcasting network SuperSport in their New Media division as a content controller.

Neo De Jenero graduated from the University of Kwazulu Natal in flying colors with an Honours degree in B.Com Accounting. Neo has also successfully completed his part 1 of SAICA’s Board exams and is in preparation for Part 2: which will secure him the much coveted title of being a qualified chartered accountant. He also devotes his free time to tutoring matriculants and lecturing 4th year Bcom. Accounting students. He is currently working for the National Treasury as an accountant.

Jenerik Soulz tries to write positive music that is easy on the ear but still doesn’t compromise its musical beliefs. It seeks to dig deeper than merely moving crowds on dance floors, the messages embedded in the sound capture the imagination of the youth and promote a positive lifestyle by encouraging listeners to chase their dreams and live responsibly. The music also serves the purpose of creating awareness amongst the youth with sensitive subjects such as HIV/AIDS which are ravaging our communities and affect everyone in some way or another. Jenerik Soulz has forged a close relationship with dance4life, a global movement established in 2003 with the fundamental aim to inspire and involve the youth to becoming active in pushing back the spread of HIV and AIDS it does this by empowering the youth with the correct knowledge and tools to prevent infection. In 2008, Jenerik Soulz donated the track “Room Service” to dance4life for its first compilation CD which also featured tracks by DJ Tiesto, the acclaimed international megastar dj/producer and other big international producers such as Maxi Jazz, Armin Van Buuren & Paul Van Dyk. Proceeds made from the CD sale were used to fund dance4life school projects.

dance4life’s goals run parallel with the beliefs of Jenerik Soulz to further empower, mobilize and inform young people. Music is the tool Jenerik Soulz uses to reach a great pool of ears in educating people across all forms of culture. We use music, simply because “Music is the vernacular of the human soul.”

As individuals with different personalities our love for music has brought us all together in a genuine and unique bond which we share as a close family. Our love for each other reflects with ease in our music as its merely an extension of our bond, our process is rather organic and instinctive and relies on a knack of feeling rather than a forced analytical process of creating music, we simply do what we know best and that’s making good positive music which is easy on the ear.
